May's First Saturday Brunch features Rick Mills and Belle Fourche railroad history.
The Tri-State Museum and Visitor Center’s First Saturday Brunch for Saturday, May 6,
will feature Rick Mills speaking on Belle Fourche railroad history.
Rick Mills is the curator of the South Dakota State Railroad Museum in Hill City. He has
written and spoken on state railroad history in many museums and institutions through
South Dakota and has also participated in the creation of many railroad-themed exhibits
in the region.
The early history of Belle Fourche is intertwined with much railroad history as it was
established to be a center for the shipping of vast numbers of cattle to points east. By
1895, Belle Fourche was shipping 2,500 carloads of cattle per month in the peak season,
making it the world's largest livestock-shipping point.
The May 6 brunch begins at 10 a.m. and is $5 per person, or free with museum
membership. The presentation at 10:30 a.m. is free to all.
